Denmac are proud to have been involved in the Manufacturing & Installation of the powder-coated laser cut aluminum screen component of this intricate Feature ‘artwork’ facade.

As the artist Penelope Forlano explains, “The artwork captures the Bansia Woodland textures in a pattern that will ultimately span 60 meters. With back and front programmable lighting, the facade will evoke a breathing effect, slow and calming, inspired by the healing practice of diaphragmatic breathing”

The well-considered approach by Perth based architectural studio CAPA, is a celebration of architecture and environment, complimenting the multicultural fabric of the local Leederville community nicely.

Designed by RAD architecture, the art-component (requirement for Multi-Use Development) has been cleverly incorporated into the bi-folding anodised metal screens in the form of a striking abstract laser-cut pattern.

The end result is an impressive urban-art façade ‘mural’ that also creates interesting shadow play to the interior enhanced by the buildings North/South dual aspect.

The redevelopment encompasses three significant structures: Padbury Walk which connects Perth Central Train Station to Murray Street Mall, Hay Street Mall and beyond. The sites are surrounded by significant infrastructure, cultural context, historic buildings and vibrant public spaces.

Designed by Hames Sharley Architects, the Redevelopment saw the demolition of the outdated beige concrete exterior on the north, south and east sides of the building. The new facade, comprised of geometric and straight-lined steel and glass, was cleverly designed to be transparent and light in order to open sightlines to the building and retail beyond.

The DENMAC team takes enormous pride in delivering the complex elements of the overall cladding system on budget and on time and ultimately contributing to a development that remains at the heart of the Perth CBD.

In sparkling sunny conditions on the Sunday morning of August 11th, the 6.5m tall numbat was the first of a series of animals to arrive on site. The structure is the first of two canopies coming to the area, with a frilled-neck lizard and a series of 10 meerkats also planned to be introduced shortly thereafter. This exciting major City of South Perth project kicked off earlier this year and is set to ignite the community with a unique blend of history, wildlife and culture, communicated through modern art.

Lights, Shadows And Aluminium

Constructed from plate aluminium in an origami-style design with articulating planes to reflect light and shadow across the surfaces, the numbat weighs approximately 5.5-6 tonnes and is 23.5m long, 6.5m tall and 5.6m wide.

Thanks to carefully considered design and fabrication of these unique structures, passing footfall will be treated to a display of light and shadows from the aluminium based canopy. The structure will represent the visual aesthetic of animals, with the upper body resembling envisaged to capitalise on bent aluminium to create an engaging play on light and shadow, whilst the underside set to introduce aluminium ribbing, expected to reflect onto the river to look like an upturned boat.

The aluminium will be finished with painted geometric patterns with some aluminium plates punctured to allow for transparency and to create the aesthetic of the animals. Depicting earthy Australian tones, bronze, yellow, orange, gold, red and stone have been used to paint the numbat.

Igniting Our Wildlife Along The Rivershore

DENMAC team is excited to introduce our work to the community after working alongside Iredale Pedersen Hook Architects to fabricate these unique canopies. These structures are all part of the Connect South initiative from the City of South Perth which aims to connect the Perth Zoo to the Mends Street Jetty – seen as the gateway to the Perth city. When deciding on the ideal animals to use for the installation, the numbat and frilled-neck lizard were selected to pay homage to the Zoo’s continued support and dedication to the conservation of wildlife and native fauna.

A Boost For The City Of South Perth

The Mends Street Jetty was hand-selected as an ideal site for the installation due to its ideal location, offering residents, community, tourists and visitors the opportunity for a vibrant welcome, with a nod to the local Australian wildlife.

City of South Perth Mayor Sue Doherty, described her excitement for the first animals of the Connect South project arriving on site. As an avid supporter of the project, Mayor Doherty described the impact these structures are expected to have within the community.

“The public art elements are sure to become conversation pieces and add to the vibrancy of the area. While some of the art is already there for you to see, there’s much more to come as we edge closer to completion of Connect South.”

Doherty went on to describe how the installation will come alive in the evening thanks to strategic lights and shadows in its unique design. “The canopies lighting up as the sun goes down, with the stunning backdrop of the Perth CBD and up to Kings Park, promises a vista yet to be experienced.”

Stage One of the Connect South project is scheduled for completion in November 2019, with future pieces set to add to the charm of the Mends Street Jetty project. We look forward to continuing the work on this revitalisation project in one of Perth’s premier locations.

DENMAC were proud to be a part of the new activation, working with BOS Civil and Emerge & Associates to fabricate and install a series of illuminated rings, designed by Stephen Pennock from Pennock Architects, which now stand on the corner of Fitzgerald and View Street.

City of Vincent Mayor Emma Cole was particularly thrilled to see the North Perth Common Piazza come to life, as she foresees drastic improvements to the community through the installation where she explained, “ With more trees, seating, a dramatic artwork and space to hold events, it will bring people to North Perth and give a great boost to our local businesses.” 

Two Years In The Making

Designed to offer a pedestrian-focused facilities within the local bike friendly zone, the North Perth Common project was the product of collaborative community feedback collated and processed by a working group dedicated to improving the suburb.

Concepts of the design were first released earlier this year, detailing the lighting art installation, as well as the green shared spaces planned for North Perth residents and local footfall. Finally coming to fruition after two years in the making, the space has been well received among the community.

Bringing Heart And Soul To North Perth

City of Vincent Mayor Emma Cole and and Perth MLA John Carey were present at the official opening, both helping to turn on the lights to the vibrant coloured rings which interact with passing traffic and pedestrians. When asked about the initiative and how it will affect the local area, Carey explained, “These reasonably small projects can go a long way towards making neighbourhood strips more attractive places for people to be.”

The project was a key election commitment from Mr Carey, who described the project as being “…all about giving heart and soul to North Perth.” – a home suburb to more than 8,500 people (source: REIWA).

Interactive & Responsive Lighting

One of the key features of the installation are the three coloured rings which project a series of circular patterns onto the road below. Powered by suspended lights and tailored projectors, the lights move and morph within their natural environment, remaining interactive and responsive to passing vehicles and pedestrians, whilst creating a striking effect that can be seen from afar.

Innovation is a key driver for DENMAC, and we were proud to deliver the interactive lighting feature which came to life at night, creating a unique vibrancy for the area, in line with the goals of the North Perth Common project itself. Sharing our passion for innovation, the locals have welcomed the new additions to the community, describing it as lively and welcoming.

Government Funded Investment

The urban activation of the North Perth Common was part of the City’s major open space initiative for 2019, with the State Government contributing $250,000 towards the $741,000 project. DENMAC’s installation is a key part of this, providing aerial illumination to the area at night, with a burst of colour and vibrancy adding to the otherwise quiet street.

The project also provided opportunities for local Perth artists to get involved, like Matthew Wong’s urban mural activation, which saw a series of multi-coloured painted benches installed throughout the suburb.

Made up of three shade structures, play equipment, modern materials and balustrade, the urban art installation brings a fresh new design aesthetic to not only the residents, but also to the local community and Mill Point Road commuters. Situated at the front entrance of the complex, guests are greeted with a welcoming façade exuding innovation, quality and elegance, with the allure of coming inside to see more.

Another Jon Tarry Masterpiece

Known for his range of artistic talents in sculptures, drawing, painting and film, Perth-based visual artist Jon Tarry is responsible for some of the most iconic landmark sculptures in Perth.

From his Convergence piece at Optus Stadium, through to his Elevacion structure at St John Of God Hospital and Elizabeth Quay installation known as Bessie, Tarry is no stranger to stamping his creative flair throughout the city.

Over the years DENMAC have also worked closely with Jon on several projects including the Fushion Apartments in Perth (WA), as well as the Sky Shard and Magenta Fold in Canberra (NSW), with his latest urban art masterpiece further contributing to his glowing portfolio.

A recent example of this includes the Yorkshire Brewery Apartments project in Collingwood (Victoria), where the site presented a series of accessibility issues. With limitations on space for cranes and scaffolding, the MetecnoKasset system was introduced to facilitate the curtain wall and panel installations, leading to the builder progressing at a rate of two floors each week on average.

Whilst on site, Cladding Systems Project Manager (Damian Hogan) was highly complimentary of the new system, labelling its benefits as ‘outstanding’. He commented as follows,

“Due to the restricted access and a number of other limitations on site, we found the speed and efficiency of the product outstanding. The new lightweight system together with a traditional installation method significantly reduced the labour costing and program times without relying on the site crane other than floor loading.”

This revolutionary system is made up of a Polyisocyanurate (PIR) fire-retarded core with unique thermal properties, making it one of the leading fire-resistant façade systems on the market, in particular for high rise apartments. This is due to MetecnoKasset’s full compliance with AS5113 regulations which test for external wall and fire spread requirements, fire propagation testing and classification of external walls of buildings – truly making it a product you can trust.

Manufactured here in Australia and originating from the renowned Metecno PIR suite of products, the company’s General Manager, Colin Richman, described the new insulated façade panelling system as having,

“…the highest fire safety benchmark of the Australian built environment.”  He went on to add, “This is truly innovative technology with its durable and versatile design can reduce installation time by up to 50 per cent and has already saved one client over $1 million on a single project.”

An Australian First in Fire Safety Standards

As of March 2018, a new stringent set of Australian safety standards were introduced to the property market with a firm focus on fire safety in light of disasters such as the Grenfell Tower Fire which took the lives of 72 Londoners in 2017.

It took almost a year for MetecnoKasset to be assessed and verified, shortly thereafter becoming the first façade system to pass all criteria from the new Australian Standard AS5113:2016 Fire Propagation for Exterior Walls. Now recognised as a fully tested and approved curtain wall system, Colin Richman (General Manager of Metenco) expects this to be a pivotal factor in demand from Australian architects, builders and developers, adding “MetecnoKasset meets AS5113’s more stringent criteria including for falling debris and radiant heat that are not found in European or American standards.”

Fire Safety Is The Talk Of The Town

Whilst fire safety has always been of the highest priority for all fresh builds in Australia, international, state and local news tabloids continue to expose stories and scenarios of combustible at-risk cladding been used. It’s become an all-too-common mainstream discussion with the Building Commission introducing a state-wide cladding audit in 2017 to assess prominent buildings throughout Perth.

When interviewed in a recent 6PR interview, Commerce Minister, John Quigley, revealed he was committed to introducing new laws which would give more power to the state’s building watchdog to enforce owners to remove combustible cladding from at risk properties and structures.

A recent WA Today article outlined that the Western Australian Building Commission have identified 12 private buildings and 19 public buildings which require urgent attention, with more in the pipeline. Some of which include popular public locations such as educational institutions; Curtin, Murdoch and UWA, alongside the Department of Health, VenuesWest and (ironically) the Department of Fire and Emergency Services.

Just this week, King Edward Memorial Hospital was also reportedly given the green light to proceed with a $15.1 million upgrade its facilities thanks to federal government funding. The face lift will address current at-risk cladding on the hospital’s facade, as well as upgrades to several lifts, fire and alarm systems, as well as structural reinforcements.

Architecture Meets Art

Apartment buildings are no stranger to being adorned with public art and Claremont in the Park is no exception. For this project DENMAC worked in collaboration one again with Lorenna Grant to produce a truly unique façade which has successfully elevated the appearance of the building. Having worked with DENMAC for over 20 years now, all parties were confident they could deliver another inspiring piece of public art. DENMAC was responsible for the anodised aluminium perforated panels whilst Lorenna was tasked with the design and concrete application to the wall.
